Swansea COP28: Climate Justice Day of Action

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Temperatures are rising, corporate profits are rising and now we are rising.

The CAE and Swansea Climate Action Network are excited to announce the Swansea COP28: Climate Justice Global Day of Action. This will take place on Saturday the 9th of December from 12pm at Castle Square, Swansea town centre. Event page here.

Mobilisations will take place in cities across Wales and the rest of the UK, including Swansea, Cardiff, Bangor, London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Glasgow. You can read more about this here: #NowWeRise – 9 Dec Day of Action - Climate Justice Coalition

The event will consist of a peaceful gathering outside Castle Square. People are encouraged to bring friends, family and colleagues. Attendees will be encouraged to create their own messages, talks and performances. After the gathering, attendees will be welcomed into Elysium Gallery Cafe, where free tea and coffee will be provided.

In recognition of the immense challenges that Climate change brings to communities within Wales, the UK and globally, we believe that it is paramount that we do not stay silent. These impacts include a lack of predictability in weather here in Wales. This year saw the hottest month in 100,000 years, followed immediately after by extreme floods and storms. Here in the UK and across the world, floods, droughts, extreme weather, bad harvests, and altered ecosystems are changing how and where we live. For example - The UK 'climate refugees' who won't leave - BBC Future

Right now, people are deciding to move, within their countries and across borders. Their journeys can be dangerous with people journeying across harsh environments, through unsafe places, and unable to reach sanctuary. Powerful countries often worsen their journeys with the weapons and walls of violent border regimes using resources that could be helping rather than harming – the border industry was worth nearly £55bn in 2020 and is fast growing. In these insecure conditions, people can become even more vulnerable to exploitation.

Yet, matters do not need to be as dismal with evidence pointing to plenty of ways by which the impacts of climate change could be mitigated if action was taken now. Too many times we have witnessed politicians backtracking on their promises, or greenwashing, whilst they continue business as usual. We must act to protect people in the UK and around the world from the worst consequences of climate change.

The CAE is a local charity that fundamentally enables and empowers marginalised people to live a fulfilling life. Climate Justice is important to The CAE because we believe in empowering communities to combat larger structural issues around poverty and inequality, particularly Swansea’s ethnically diverse residents. Climate justice, war, poverty, gender, race and the economy are intrinsically connected, and we plan to discuss this at the Action on Saturday 9th.

SwanseaCAN is an inclusive network of organisations and individuals, supporting awareness raising, campaigns and practical action in the Swansea area, to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

Our intention is to provide a platform for communities and groups, particularly those significantly impacted by climate change, to express their concerns and efforts for change. We are encouraging groups and individuals to speak on issues which matter to them, fostering collaboration on various interconnected issues. In this spirit, we express our solidarity with movements such as those supporting Palestine, anti-racism, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Therefore, it would be brilliant if you were able to attend the event on Saturday. Because we know that a vast amount of people in Swansea are already committed to working together in the face of the climate crisis, we believe that this would be a story that would engage a wide audience and would subsequently have a significant impact.
